Our Future Leaders Programme is about supporting young people to map out what they need to do to achieve their goals, and helping them to develop the confidence to steer their own future. Central to this is coaching, which supports Future Leaders to plan pathways to their chosen destinations, take appropriate action, review their progress, and reflect on what they have learnt. Importantly, this is not a one-off process but an approach to thinking about themselves and their own development that they can draw upon throughout their life, and that they can teach to others.
Coaching: different to teaching or mentoring
Coaching is different to teaching or mentoring, both of which - to a greater or lessor degree - are based on a hierarchical relationship: the idea that the student or mentee lacks some essential knowledge or skills that they need to be taught. Coaching is about unlocking the ideas, abilities and enthusiasms that already exist within young people, supporting them to guide themselves to the answers or solutions.
Our "OPEN" coaching model (Outcome, Purpose, Evidence of Block, New Strategies) creates a rich thinking environment for the young people we work with. Coaching is structured to give Future Leaders agency, and supports them to identify what it is that they really want, to explore the multitude of options available to them, to understand and put in place the resources they need to achieve their goals, and to act.
Be the next Villiers Park Progression Coach
Fancy helping more young people to fulfil their potential? We're growing the teams in our four hub locations - Hastings, Norfolk, Swindon and Tyneside - and we're seeking a new Progression Coach for each. We're particularly keen to hear from recent or soon-to-be graduates who are passionate about supporting young people from under-represented backgrounds, especially those with experience of support from widening participation programmes themselves. Hit the link at the bottom of the page for full details and to apply.
Here's what Saima, one of our existing Progression Coaches, has to say about the role:
“As a Progression Coach at Villiers Park, I find each day is different whilst supporting young people in schools and I enjoy the variety of what I do. Working with Future Leaders throughout their journey during the pivotal years of High School can be challenging, however the relationships built with them are everlasting. Although I am there to inspire and raise awareness within these young people, I find myself inspired by their achievements. Some young people aren’t aware of what they are capable of, and seeing them grow from a tiny thought or idea into a lifelong career or education pathway astonishes me.
"Some young people aren’t aware of the possibilities, such as going to university; watching this become a reality is a daily occurrence. This is simply what I am passionate about, and what drives me to work with these young people. Being alongside them throughout this challenging yet rewarding journey makes me feel privileged and I am thankful for the opportunity. I believe my time is well-spent working with future generations.”
