Ben joined Villiers Park in September 2024, after having recently completed degrees in Politics and Philosophy. Ben was inspired by his academic pursuits to join Villiers Park where he hopes to take the lessons learned during his postgraduate research into his coaching sessions. Outside of work, you can find Ben testing out all the new food spots in Newcastle!

What does your role entail?

As a Progression Coach, I have the regular privilege of working with young people across Newcastle, by discussing their individual hopes and aspirations for their ‘future selves’. I’ve also been involved in some of Villiers Park’s other projects recently. Namely, a Year-12 trip to Sopra Steria’s Edinburgh office, and a visit to the Career Development Institute’s National Conference. I’ve also been assisting with the delivery of our Early Entry programme which supports young people applying for highly competitive courses in Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine and Oxbridge courses.

What did you do before coming to Villiers Park?

Before working at Villiers Park, I completed a BA in Politics, and thereafter an MLitt in Philosophy, both at Newcastle University. My postgraduate research investigated Continental philosophies of hope, authenticity, and recognition. I wrote my final thesis on what is known as the ‘self-help’ industry, and the politics of mental health.

What is your favourite part about your job?

In my role, I get the chance to give young people the keys to doors that they never knew existed. Seeing our Future Leaders walk through these doors independently is the best part of this job.

Programmes

What is a book you always will always recommend?

Only ONE!? Kitchen Confidential, Anthony Bourdain

If you could travel to anywhere in the world where would you go?

Thailand... Vietnam... Japan, maybe?

Who are your two dream dinner party guests?

Now that’s tricky, but what’s a dinner party without lively conversation? Nietzsche brings the debate, and we'll leave Jesus Christ to do the old water/wine trick

What would your perfect weekend look like?

Strong coffee, good food, and anything outside when it’s not raining!

Our Impact

We work with hundreds of young people every year, empowering them to succeed in their chosen field.
